A winter walk along the beach

I took a walk along the beach on this cold winter day. With the summer crowd gone, the beach stretches on for miles ahead of me, empty and lonely with barely a soul. It’s loud and noisy today, in the anticipation of yet another storm. The waves roar as they soar up high and crash to the ground. The cold winter wind whistles as it dances along the shore. Gulls squawk loudly as they dive noisily for fish. And I walk on, energized by the sounds of the rumbling concert around me.

I snuck up on these two as they strolled lazily along the beach, together, side by side, with hands behind their back. Sometimes stopping to gaze at the waves coming in. Sometimes stopping to inspect new treasures brought in.

We stumbled upon this treasure together, swept up along the shore. I’m not sure what to make of it – an abandoned nest of love built of bits and pieces of straw. Tiny clams now take refuge in it, huddled together against the frigid cold.

But my favorite find of all is this big piece of driftwood washed up along the beach. The lines etched into its wood speak of journeys long and far. Adrift for so long, baggage carried by the waves, now weary and tired, it lies forlorn by the shore.

I love winter walks along the beach. The loud, noisy concert, the refreshing cold air…and you never know what treasures you’ll find today, buried in the sand.

I like the last photograph of the drift wood.

The other photographs look underexposed (or perhaps it was dark) making the whole scene a little morose.

I agree with Trevor, the pictures are a little gloomy although I like the first one a lot.

I cant believe you went for a walk in that freezing weather! I would have curled up near a fire and read a book.

BTW, your writing is very poetic. It feels like you write from your heart.

The photos could have come out much much better (you are right, it was an extremely gloomy day with the sun peeking out occasionally) and I hesitated at first about putting them up, but for me this blog has been about putting up photos that hold a memory to me rather than putting up the perfect photo. I put them up so I could remember the day for what it was - a little gloomy, but fun nonetheless.

I do appreciate your comment though - it does help me learn! :)

I am the only weirdo I know that actually enjoys being out in bad weather. The worse, the better. I get to see nature at its most intense during bad weather.

Thanks for your very nice comment on my writing - it made my day! I simply try to put down into words what I felt at the moment.

Hopefully there will be more sunshiney days ahead so I wont have to put up gloomy photos. LOL. :)

Lovely post. Very contentedly melancholic. :) The best thing about being out in "bad" weather is, there are few other people about. I used to love running in my univ's park in the rain - when it'd be deserted. So I can relate. But this walk looks cooooooold! :)

beautiful pictures and lovely thoughts and so the desire to witness the life beyond our own imagination.

a season that marks things to settle down and I say the pictures that come with variegated feelings, that express the emotions without being affected by the photoshop-ed life. In this case eyes are the powerful medium to convince there exist a life that most of us forget to recognize it.

You have a wonderful weekend ahead.

You sound so much like me.
Okay, so maybe I'm not the only weirdo I know that enjoys bad weather...this makes two of us. lol.

So nice to hear from someone that understands where I'm coming from.
I've sometimes been told how much better my photos would look with a little help from photoshop. Other than the fact that I dont have the patience to learn photoshop as thoroughly as I'd like to (one of these days maybe I will), I like the fact that my un-photoshoped photos deliver to me the raw emotions I felt in the moment that I took the photo. No editing. No post-processing. Someday maybe I'll appreciate photoshop for its many, many abilities, but for now I am content to capture memories simply as they are, unedited. Pretty or ugly, good photos or bad, they are what they are.

I know I am late comer but I also know you won't mind it. As usual I had seen the post from my reader so comment or no comment you know I am here. :)

Once again I utter your words give a nice company to pictures !!

And I agree with you here on putting the photos for memories they hold irrespective of the quality. I am of the same view. Keep it up.

Looks like it was really a cold gloomy day with lots of ice around. I would have loved to be there with my nose numb & hands freezing.... how could you even hold the camera ? I remember my cold days in Swiss jungles. loll..

BTW, can I ask which beach it is ? the place ??

^ yay! I'm glad you made it here...better late than never ;)
Thanks for your encouraging comments as always.

It is the coldest night of the year today and I just got back from being outside so my nose is red, and my fingers and toes feel numb.

I put the location in the label...it's a place called Silver Beach in Michigan's lower peninsula..the water body is lake michigan.

Came here via blogbharti. I cannot really comment on technical aspects of the photos, but I loved the last one. In fact in all those photos, one can see a vision -- they don't seem impersonal, like many photographs do. They seem like someone's very personal view. I guess I'm not making sense. So I'll stop, and check out other stuff here.
